Good luck for you everyday · The incredible story of Peng Phan
The Documentary Film
Peng Phan lived through the brutally repressive regime of Cambodian dictator Pol Pot, which killed up to two million people. Imprisoned by the Khmer Rouge, she came close to death but was one of just a few who managed to escape from a detention center as hundreds around her, including many children, were massacred.
Haunted by her memories of children murdered by the Khmer Rouge, Peng Phan decided to devote her life to Cambodia's youth and turn her home into an orphanage.
By giving poor and homeless children a place to find love and solidarity, art and music, Peng Phan hopes she can build a happier future for those too young to remember the horrific and tragic history that left such deep scars on Cambodia.
The story of Peng Phan is a tale of true heroism: of strength, love and passion in the face of war and tragedy on a genocidal scale; her glamorous memories of life as a famous movie star after the brutal Khmer Rouge years; her hope that in sharing love, music and dance with the children of Cambodia she can help write a better future for the history books of tomorrow.
"Good luck for you every day'' is the incredible story of Peng Phan.
Peng Phan · Mama
56 years old
"The Khmer Rouge killed everybody at the prison. I have really traumatic memories about all this. When we went to towns to perform, I look at the kids and think that maybe they are the ones who I stayed in prison with, that they have been born again. I have very strong feelings towards them. Thats why I decided to create an orphanage, despite all the difficulties I could encounter.
Yim Ravy · Books Seler
13 years old
"I think I just have bad luck everyday. While some people find happiness every day, I just go through problems and difficulties".
Hok Sophal · Tok Tok Driver
41 years old
Orphan
"I try to take care of all those kids. I would like them to continue studying, and I will fight for them, no matter how hard it is. I will try and do what is possible in order to help them".
Jin Kunthea · NACA's kid
14 years old
"Kunthea says she sees her mum every night. She just comes to visit her daughter. Her mum makes Kunthea dream about how good it is for her to be in NACA right now. She makes her see that if she stays here, she will have a better future".
Raeksmey Chen · Music Teacher
19 years old
"If I hadnt been able to go to NACA, I would not have become an artist. I really want to be a musician and an artist. I would not be able to fulfil my dreams if I stayed in my parents house".
Heng Chham · NACA's kid
7 years old
Abandoned
"My parents are dead. Grandpa Fuso adopted me and brought me here. He allows me to study, he lets me to sleep here and eat properly because he knows it is good for me".
Dauk David · NACA's kid
6 years old
"Fuso grandpa gives us rice for lunch, he lets me chicken. When we wake up we eat cake. At night we have rice for dinner and then we watch TV for a while. ".
Orphanage Project N.A.C.A
Created in 1999 by the Savangs, and, above all, due to the ongoing fight carried out by the figure of The Mama (Peng Phan), to contribute to the improvement of child problems originated in the social unstructuration caused by Pol Pot's dictatorship, the N.A.C.A (National Action Culture Association) orphanage opened its doors in 2001, to foster all those boys and girls that, due to the economic shortage of their families, could not be granted regular studies nor an ongoing sanitary control. Nowadays, 30 children, their ages ranging from 6 to 18 years old, are under Peng Phan's care.
Currently, Cambodia has a serious problem of child overpopulation (there is an average of 5.6 children per married couple), joined to a considerable poverty level (there is a percentage of 7.3% in infant mortality). Cambodia's total population amounts to 13.5 million people and a 38% of them are children under 15. This context implies an extreme and almost unbearable situation, since there is no social project in sexual education , and in raising awareness towards the use of preservatives, as far as governmental authorities are concerned. At the same time, there is a complete lack of interest to face up to this problem and to find a solution to it.
Therefore, we encounter a social reality in which an uncertain future awaits a great number of children, since their families cannot give them sustain, and they can not but send them to orphanages until their coming of age, or send them to the streets to sell who knows what products.
More than a 30% of Cambodians lack school education, and hardly a 35% have finished high school, since enrollment in secondary school is semi-private and private. One must also take into account that there are not enough scholar places for all the boys and girls. This is why we find a total of 1.5 million working children (a 40% of the minors between 7 and 17 work 45 hours a week for hardly a dollar daily).
At the N.A.C.A orphanage, besides providing them with roof, food and clothes, there is a very important conscientiousness towards the teaching of English (delivered by foreign volunteers), since nowadays this language is of vital importance for the future. Besides, the second key educative point in the orphanage is learning traditional and contemporary dance alongside Cambodian music. However, in this orphanage there is shortage of food, clothes, medicines and, above all, space -due to the increasing number of children being fostered the space has become small.
After the start up contact with all the children from the N.A.C.A orphanage, a new illusion began to take shape: helping them out. In this way, the crystallization of that first illusion began at returning to Corbera de Llobregat where, with the collaboration of friends, family and a handful of people sensitized towards the issue a new challenge to keep on even harder began to take form, the Association for Development Cooperation Press the Button was created.
We think that the construction of a new orphanage for these children is achievable, and the way we can do so is by means of photography and audiovisuals.
Projecte Orfenat N.A.C.A
Proyecto Orfanato N.A.C.A
